I designed this electric
upright bass and built three of them during my luthiery studies. All
three versions of the bass are
shown in the picture below, the first version on the left and the third
on
the right. By the time I had finished the third one, I named this model
"LunaStick".
The basic elements of this eurb model are present already in the first version. It has a sleek, partly hollow body with curved top. The body is made of aspen and finished with cherry sunburst and high-gloss acrylic lacquer. The neck is of maple, also with lacquer finish, and it's attached to the body with six big screws. The fingerboard and tailpiece are of ebony, of course. The pickup is a B-Band transducer, placed under the bridge, in direct contact with the top surface of the body. The pickup model is actually made for acoustic guitar, but it works tremendously well also with double bass. This great microphone together with the hollow body gives the bass a very acoustic-like and woody sound. The tripod stand is simply a shortened microphone stand, which the telescopic endpin can be attached to. Of course the bass can also be played without the tripod, using only the endpin and the stainless steel arch that imitates the upper bout of an acoustic double bass. The endpin and both archs can be detached from the body, making the whole to fit in a very slim, easy-to-carry case. I made the bridge hight-adjustable with two large thumbwheels. I also moved the B-Band transducer closer to the strings, placing it under a separate saddle made of ebony and set in a groove in the top surface of the bridge. This helps to avoid unwanted body noises. The biggest functional change is the tripod which now is a heavy-duty Pearl tom stand. The attachment point to the bass is on the back of the body, about in the midpoint of the body length. This gives the whole system great stability and also adjustability. Naturally also this version can be played with or without the tripod, as you can see in the two playing images below: |
